Aquatic Invasive Species

What is an aquatic invasive species?

An aquatic invasive species is a freshwater or marine organism that has spread or been introduced beyond its native range and is either causing harm or has the potential to cause harm. An aquatic species that is native in one place could become invasive in another. It's essential to do your research to understand which species are native to your area and which ones are invasive.

The Clean Drain Dry Initiative educates and empowers recreational users to do their part in stopping the spread of aquatic invasive species (AIS). With an estimated annual cost of $137 billion, AIS harm humans, the environment, and the economy. America's 13 million boaters and more than 42 million hunters share the responsibility to stop the spread of invasive species.

These species can spread through everyday activities like fishing, hunting, and boating, or through more intentional actions, such as when someone dumps unwanted aquarium fish or plants into a lake. Increased global trade also plays a significant role in the spread of invasives, as it facilitates the transportation and introduction of new species into different areas.

You can help protect our waters.

Preventing the spread of aquatic invasive species starts with you. By taking a few simple steps, you can protect our aquatic resources and ensure these harmful species do not spread into new areas. The most important things you can do as a watercraft owner to prevent the introduction and spread of invasive species are:

  • Clean your watercraft and outdoor recreation gear after each use.

  • Drain all bilge, ballast tanks, bait containers, and live wells.

  • Dry all equipment and gear for 5 days before you go to another waterbody.

  • Never release unwanted pets or aquarium contents into the wild.

Our partners include state and federal agencies, lake associations, and trade associations, all united by the common goal of preserving our fishing and hunting habitats. From magazines and billboards to geofencing and digital media, we create comprehensive outreach plans to protect your lakes and rivers. Together, we can ensure a sustainable future for our natural resources.

The Invaders in Art

In partnership with the Art of Conservation, the Clean Drain Dry Initiative supports the Invader Crusader Award where K-12 students can learn more about aquatic invasive species through art and understand the impact invasive species have on our waterways.
